Self-Care

Self-Care is a deliberate and conscious effort to take care of our emotional, mental and physical health and well-being. Self-Care is being kind to ourselves, our minds and our bodies. When we practice self-care, we do better in school, our relationships with others are healthier, and feelings of anxiety and depression are diminished.

Below you will find resources you can use at home to help teach this important skill to your child.

Emotional Regulation

Emotional Regulation is the way we handle big feelings like anger, disappointment and anxiety. Emotional Regulation (sometimes called self-regulation) is the ability to identify your feelings, and express them in a healthy and appropriate way. Emotional regulation does not mean getting rid of feelings, but rather being aware of them. Once we are aware of our emotions, we can take control in the way we express them. Below you will find resources you can use at home to better understand emotional regulation, and help teach this important skill to your child.

Coping Skills

Coping Skills are tools and techniques a person can use to help handle difficult emotions, decrease stress, and increase mental wellbeing. In short, coping skills are things we do, to change the way we feel.  Coping Skills are very person specific. Something that helps one person to cope well, may have little effect on another. Often experimentation is needed to find coping skills that work for us.  Below you will find resources you can use at home to help teach this important skill to your child.

Positive Self-Image

Self-Image is the mental picture we have of ourselves. It is the way we see our abilities, behavior, appearance and personality. When we have a positive self-image, we recognize and own our talents, abilities and potential, while being realistic about our shortcomings and limitations. A positive self-image focus’ on strengths and assets. It includes nurturing our self-esteem and having an accurate self-perception. When a person thinks positively about who they are, their talents, their life experiences and their abilities, they are more likely to understand themselves, have confidence, practice self-control, and achieve their goals.
