The Weber School District Foundation hosted a phenomenal Special Olympics Unified Soccer Tournament at Bonneville High School this week, drawing participation from all Weber District schools and even some guests from outside the district. The event wasn't just about competition, it was a beautiful display of community, inclusion, and pure joy.

A Day of Fun and Friendship

"Walking around and seeing the kids is just awesome," said Bonneville High Principal Rich Murray. "It's been a huge community event. We've had so much fun with it, and I hope our athletes have too!"

The sentiment was echoed by student athlete Olivia, who couldn't contain her enthusiasm. "It was so fun seeing all the schools come out together. Everyone got to hang out and cheer each other on. It's amazing to see the athletes get so excited when they score – they truly love what they're doing!"

Building Bonds Through Unified Sports

The tournament wasn't just about winning games, it was about creating lasting connections. According to District Administrator Jared Abney, "Our biggest hope is that these interactions build friendships. We want our students to learn to accept and care for each other in a meaningful way."

The success of the event wouldn't have been possible without the dedication of countless individuals. Abney expressed his gratitude to Bonneville High School for hosting, the transportation department for ensuring smooth logistics, and the Weber School District Foundation for their financial support. He also highlighted the importance of Jenna Butters' work on inclusion within the district's strategic plan.

A Call to Get Involved

Teachers like Jake Lower shared their passion for Unified Sports. "There's nothing like seeing these kids have an opportunity to succeed and have fun," he said. Lower also emphasized the inclusivity of the program, stating, "We can adapt and modify to make it a fun experience for anybody." He encouraged others to get involved, highlighting opportunities in basketball, track and field, and of course, soccer.

Witnessing the Power of Sports

Parent Grant Holmes spoke to the pure joy radiating from the event. "It's awesome to see these kids come out, have fun, and support each other. From a parent's perspective, there's nothing better." He encouraged everyone to show up and participate, whether it's volunteering or simply cheering on the sidelines.

The infectious enthusiasm of student athlete Nina summed up the day perfectly. "We had lots of fun! We scored a lot, and I got second place!" Her words, coupled with the dedication of teachers like Jamie Hafey who praised the "100% spirit" of the athletes, solidified the tournament's success. Hafey also highlighted the volunteers who showed up ready to be "friends" with the athletes, exemplifying the core spirit of Unified Sports.

The Weber School District Foundation's Unified Soccer Tournament was a resounding success, leaving a trail of smiles, friendships, and a renewed sense of community spirit. It's a testament to the power of sports to bring people together and celebrate the joy of competition for all.

Local author J. Scott Savage has captivated students across the Weber School District with his inspiring message about the power of creativity and storytelling. Over the past week, Savage visited twelve schools in the district, sharing his expertise and encouraging students to embrace their imaginations.

During his visits, Savage guided students through the elements of a well-crafted story, from character development to plot structure. Students were then challenged to create their own original storylines, sparking their creativity and fostering a love for writing.

Savage, a prolific author with over 20 books to his name, primarily focuses on children's fantasy. His latest work, "Quantum Interstellar Sports League," has been praised for its imaginative world-building and engaging characters.

The author's visits have been met with enthusiasm from both students and educators. By inspiring young minds to explore the world of storytelling, Savage hopes to cultivate a new generation of writers and readers.

As part of the presentation Savage shares the power of stories and how every student can engage the process of storytelling. Savage says, "I want kids to see that reading and writing can be fun and not a chore."

Also,On Saturday, September 21, author J. Scott Savage launched his new book, Quantum Interstellar Sports League, at Mountain View Junior High.  Over 300 attendees were able to play a football throwing game, solve puzzles and complete a ring toss so they could earn a spin at the prize wheel.  J. Scott Savage signed his new book and gave away posters, trading cards and bookmarks.  Special thanks to Mountain View Junior High for hosting this event and WSD Library Technology Specialists for volunteering their time to help.

In an effort to foster a sense of community and support for military families, Rocky Mountain Junior High hosted its first annual Military Family Social on September 6th. The event aimed to connect military families, veterans, and retired service members with one another and provide them with essential resources available in the local area.

Larissa Archuleta, the new military support specialist for Weber School District, explained the purpose of the event, stating, "We want to create a network where military families feel supported and connected. By bringing them together, we can introduce them to various community resources and help them build lasting relationships."

One of the primary goals of the social was to identify military-connected students and their families so that the school district could provide tailored support. Christa Davis, the military family point of contact for Rocky Mountain Junior High School, emphasized the importance of welcoming and including these families. "By simply being friendly we can make military families feel at home in our community," she said.

Rocky Mountain Junior High, a Purple Star School, is committed to honoring and celebrating the members of the armed forces and their families. The school offers a range of resources and support services to help military-connected students and their families adjust to the community.

The event featured a variety of activities aimed at connecting military families and the community. Attendees had the opportunity to meet other families, learn about local resources, and enjoy a festive atmosphere. The school district also encouraged students to befriend their military-connected peers and make them feel welcome.

As this inaugural event proved to be a success, Weber School District plans to continue hosting Military Family Socials in the future. By providing a platform for military families to connect and receive support, the district hopes to continue to be an inclusive and welcoming environment for all students.

Country View Elementary School celebrated the grand opening of its new playground on September 11, 2024. The playground was made possible thanks to a generous R.A.M.P grant, community donations, and the tireless efforts of school staff, parents, and community members.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony was attended by school officials, local dignitaries, parents, and excited students. Principal Mary Heslop expressed her gratitude to everyone who contributed to the project, highlighting the dedication and hard work of the school community.

The new playground is a testament to the power of collaboration and community spirit. Principal Heslop added "This will benefit their education by allowing them to release energy, build social connections, and come back to the classroom ready to learn."

The playground features a variety of play equipment, including slides, swings, climbing structures, and imaginative play areas. The new space is designed to promote physical activity, social interaction, and creativity among students.

"The community all came together and made it happen," said Amber Jones, the Country View PTA President. She was impressed with how quickly it happened once everyone got involved.

The playground project was funded in part by a grant from Weber County R.A.M.P  and through fundraising efforts by the school's PTA and community members. The school also received generous donations from local businesses and countless individuals.

The new playground is expected to benefit students for years to come and serve as a valuable community resource.

Monday, September 9th, marked a significant milestone as Haven Bay Elementary School officially opened its doors, welcoming excited students and staff. Principal Justin Skeen shared his thoughts on this special occasion during an interview, highlighting the joy of seeing the students arrive.

"You know, once the students showed up this morning, it put everything together for us. That was the most important thing—getting kids on our campus, all in the same location. It made everything else, like the ongoing construction, not as important. The students are happy and excited to be here," Skeen said. "That makes all the difference in the world for us."

Reflecting on the students’ reactions, Skeen described their awe at the new school facilities. "Well, for one, they think their school's amazing. When they see their classrooms, many said things like, 'Wow, my room is so big!' or 'I can't believe this is my school.' That excitement carried into today, and there's such a positive energy—it’s like none other."

Principal Skeen also emphasized Haven Bay's focus on building community and teamwork. "Our expectations are to build teams and create a strong school culture, which is really important here at Haven Bay—from the office to every aspect of the building, to our students. We want to build a sense of community."

Haven Bay Elementary has already set the tone for a bright future, where students, staff, and families can thrive in a supportive and collaborative environment. As the new school year begins, Haven Bay is poised to become a cornerstone of the community, shaping young minds and fostering a sense of unity.
