Services

Weber School District provides students with disabilities a Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE). We offer a continuum of services to provide a variety of program options for students. This continuum includes the following:

  • Regular class
  • Regular class with part-time special education services
  • Self-contained resource services
  • Special class
  • Special School
  • Home and Hospital Instruction

Assistive Technology

Assistive technology specialists provide assessment and development of augmentative, alternative, and assistive communication systems for students who are non-speaking, or who are severely limited in their quality of speech or written language.

Motor Team

The motor team consists of the district Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists and Adapted Physical Educators. These professionals are housed at Canyon View School and provide OT, PT and APE services to students with disabilities throughout Weber School District. These services are provided to students who have physical limitations which prevent them from accessing their special education programs or curriculum.

Speech and Language Services

The first 3 years of life, when the brain is developing and maturing, is the most intensive period for acquiring speech and language skills. These skills develop best in a world that is rich with sounds, sights, and consistent exposure to the speech and language of others.

Transition

Transition services are activities, academic and functional, that help a child who has a disability, move effectively from school to post high school outcomes. The intent of transition is to focus on the student’s needs, strengths, preferences, and interests.  Administrators, teachers, parents, related professionals, and the student work together to develop and implement a plan for attaining a successful and satisfying life after high school. 

Transition services include considering the following domains:

  • Employment, including supported employment
  • Postsecondary educational activities, including education and vocational training
  • Independent living, including exploration of residential options and adult daily living skills

Programs

Early Intervention

Preschool

  • Inclusive Preschool (4 yr olds-year prior to kindergarten)
  • Tier 2 (3 yr olds)
    Our tier two preschool classrooms use We Can curriculum which teaches children to learn through their play. Teachers and paraprofessionals work with students to help them learn the skills needed to be more successful in kindergarten.
  • Tier 3
    In Partners for Success, preschool tier three classrooms, teachers and paraprofessional work one-on-one with children using discrete trial teaching. Placement is determined by IEP teams based on current data in Early Intervention or Tier 2 preschool setting. We work with preschoolers who struggle behaviorally to work, learn, and play in other preschool classrooms.
  • Speech Only

Post High

This program is for students age 18 to 22 years old, who received special education services while in high school, to complete credits required to earn a high school diploma. 

LIFE Program

Learning Independence From Experiences

LIFE is a post high school transition program for students with moderate to severe disabilities. Placement in the program is an IEP team decision and students may be eligible for services until the age of 22.

Skills taught in the LIFE Program include daily living skills and vocational skills.  These skills are taught whenever possible in a community setting.  Job training, shopping, UTA skills, and recreation/leisure skills occur in the community.  Daily classes are held at Canyon View School focusing on vocational skills, communication skills, social skills, functional math and reading skills, and physical fitness to meet IEP goals. Each student’s program is individually designed by their IEP team to meet that student’s needs and goals. 

The LIFE Program works closely with adult agencies to ensure that students are receiving and will receive all support services that are available.  Some of these agencies include Social Security Administration, Medicaid, Division of Services for People with Disabilities (DSPD), Vocational Rehabilitation, Roads to Independence (Independent Living Center) and others as needed.

Teacher Salary Supplement Program (TSSP)

The Teacher Salary Supplement Program (TSSP) was created to draw qualified individuals into education for specific subject areas that have been identified with staffing shortages and/or for the assistance with the fees affiliated with obtaining and maintaining accreditations with the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certification (NBPTS). USBE Para to Teacher Scholarship Opportunity

 

Utah State University's Online Practical Teacher Training (OPTT) Program

USU's OPTT is available to special education teachers with associate educator licenses and special education paraprofessionals (with or without a bachelor's degree). Applicants must be working in a district or charter school that agrees to collaborate with USU's Department of Special Education and Rehabilitation Counseling to provide classroom support throughout the program.

Child Find

Every child is entitled to a public education regardless of disability. Children with disabilities may go without services because families are not fully aware of their options. If you know of a child, birth to age 22, who is not receiving any education services or feel that your child may be in need of special education services, please contact your local school or call the Special Education Department in Weber School District at 801-476-7864.

The identification, location andevaluation of students suspected of having a disability includes students attending private schools, students who are highly mobile, students who have been suspended or expelled from school, home schooled students, students who have not graduated from high school with a regular high school diploma and those who may be in need of special education and related services even though they are advancing from grade to grade, and regardless of the severity of the disability.

Carson Smith

The Carson Smith Special Needs Scholarship Program (CSS) is a parent choice model for Utah residents that provides tuition assistance for eligible special needs students enrolled in eligible private schools. The scholarship is for students who would qualify for special education and related services in public schools, preschool through 12th grade (3‐21 years of age), whose parents choose an eligible private school. Together, Local Education Agencies (LEAs), CSS eligible private schools, and parents determine special education eligibility through a process guided by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA); the same requirements for special education services in public schools. File Retention

Students who attended special education programs in Weber School District are being advised that the district is only required to keep special education records for three years after the student received their high school diploma or three years after the student turns 22 under IDEA. Medicaid requires that records be maintained for at least five years after the provision of services. At that time the records are no longer needed for educational purposes.  If you would like to see if your student's special education records are available, please contact Carlene DiBartolo at 801-476-7864.

Notice - Records for students born 9/1/2000 - 8/31/2001 will be destroyed July 1, 2024. 

Procedural Safeguards

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), the Federal law concerning the education of students with disabilities, requires schools to provide parents of a student with a disability or adult students with disabilities with a notice containing a full explanation of the procedural safeguards available under the IDEA and U.S. Department of Education regulations. A copy of this notice must be given to parents or adult students only one time a school year, except that a copy must be given to parents or adult students:

  1. Upon initial referral or parent request for evaluation;
  2. Upon receipt of the first State complaint and upon receipt of the first due process complaint in a school year;
  3. When a decision is made to take a disciplinary action that constitutes a change of placement; and
  4. Upon parent or adult student request (34 CFR § 300.504(a)).

Both you and the school share in your student’s education. If you or the school has issues or concerns about your student’s education, you and your student’s teacher should openly discuss the issues. If you are not satisfied with these discussions, you should contact the special education director for your school district/charter school. We urge you to be actively involved in your student’s education.

As parents of students who are receiving special education services, or who may qualify for special education services, you have certain rights or procedural safeguards under Federal and State laws. These rights are listed in this Procedural Safeguards Notice. This list of your rights must be given to you in your native language or in a communication method you can understand. If you would like a more detailed explanation of these rights, please contact the principal at your student’s school, a school administrator, the special education director, or the Utah State Board of Education Special Education Services section.
