• Your yard – see how many different kinds of bugs you can find. Look in flower beds, in the grass, under rocks, in the corners of your garage and ask the question “what does it eat and what eats it?”

• The neighborhood park – do the same as in your yard.

• Ogden Bay Wildlife Management Area. https://wildlife.utah.gov/list-all/location/173-ogden-bay-wma.html Head west on 12^th street to 7500 West and travel South or head west on 5500 South in Roy until you get to 7500 West. Walk the dikes and see what is out there.

• Bonneville Shoreline trail system. https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/utah/bonneville-shoreline-trail-mt-ogden-section Go to the 29^th street trail head and take a hike.

• Fort Buenaventura. http://www.webercountyutah.gov/Parks/fortb/ Play disc golf, chase the “cotton” falling from the trees, paddle in the pond, watch the geese, find your own hiding place, and even take your family camping here.

• Ogden Nature Center on 12^th street in Ogden https://www.ogdennaturecenter.org/ Has a maze of trails, and volunteers to guide you and answer questions. There is an entrance fee.

• Bike Park https://www.visitogden.com/blog/ogden-bike-park/ At the east end of 9^th street provides fun trails for all skill levels.

• Float the Ogden river in a tube. http://www.saltproject.co/blog/tubing-ogden-river-adventurin  Tube rental available at Gear 30 for $10. Float Lorin Farr Park to the Walmart parking lot crystal wave.

• Bear River Bird Refuge in Brigham City. https://www.fws.gov/refuge/bear_river_migratory_bird_refuge/  Visitors center just west of freeway on Forest Street. Auto tour route heads west from there. Amazing place to see birds and bugs and mammals too.

• Beus Pond https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/utah/beus-pond-trail On the South East corner of Country Hills Drive in Ogden is a lovely place to watch wildlife and take a hike if you have the energy.

• Wheeler Creek Canyon https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/utah/wheeler-creek-trail

Swanson's North Fork Environmental Center is dedicated to providing a safe outdoor experience for students K-12, helping them understand core curriculum.  Consider it your destination field trip spot.

Mission Statement

The Environmental Center will be a facility and a setting for all students to safely learn about the workings of nature, about themselves, and to build positive relationships with each other and the natural world.

Serving grades K-12 the Center provides a central lodge with kitchen and restroom facilities as well as two dorms that sleep a total of 76 people. In addition the cook will feed you well and the teacher/facilitator is there to see your stay is wonderful and worthwhile. Equipment for activities year round is available at the Center.

The Center provides a gem of a spot for a fine field trip, with fun and great memories, as well as reinforcing core concepts outlined in the Utah State Core Curriculum across many different subject areas.

The Mission of Career and Technical Education (CTE) is to provide students with the technical skills and academic knowledge needed to prepare them for future employment and/or a successful transition to post-secondary education. CTE Pathways show students a direct connection between doing well in high school and being able to transition smoothly to post-secondary opportunities or getting a good job when they graduate. CTE offers a wide variety of courses at the junior high and high school level. Many of our high school CTE courses offer Concurrent Enrollment (CE) credit through Utah colleges and universities.

The workplace in our country has become increasingly more dynamic and demanding at a phenomenal pace. Knowledge and skills that are useful and marketable today may be completely obsolete before the end of the year or even sooner. For this reason, the students of today need an education that is not only rigorous and relevant, but one that prepares them to advance in a career.

CTE training is vital. Nearly one-third of the fastest growing occupations will require an associate’s degree or a post-secondary vocational certificate, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics. Employers will be hiring more people with technical education than any other group. In addition, the fastest growing job categories in the United States will be technology related. In Utah, a coalition of business and education leaders have a vision for educating our youth to revitalize Utah's economy. CTE offers students the opportunity to learn from extremely well qualified, professional instructors in a contextual setting using up to date, “real world” technology. CTE continually works at building collaborative, articulated programs with post-secondary educational institutions to increase the educational options for our students. A majority of our programs have state administered competency tests associated with the course of study. Our goal is to consistently score above the state average in every program area.

Student leadership opportunities along with local, state and national competitions are available through our CTSO's (Career and Technical Student Organzations).

Work Based Learning (WBL) opportunities are provided to qualified 12th grade students. After completing a Critical Workplace Skills independent study course, apprenticeships and/or internships are available at local businesses, medical facilities, schools, and government entities.

A nontraditional career is any occupation in which women or men comprise 25 percent or less of its total employment. Our teachers and counselors work to enhance awareness about nontraditional careers and dispel stereotypes and myths about these careers.

We believe in our students, support our teachers and constantly look for ways to improve our programs!
